Adjustments
During the life of your dentures, things happen- clasps break off, you drop them, eat something hard, sit on them… you get the picture. We offer adjustment services, by appointment only. Tightening of your denture clasps, adjusting your bite and areas that are rubbing etc. are common, especially with new denture wearers.
Some denture wearers have very stable mouths and look after their dentures and teeth well. As with complete dentures, an average life span may be expected to be 5 years but again this does vary and isn’t the same for everyone or indeed every type of denture.
Complete & Partial Dentures
Dentures serve an important cosmetic purpose, but they also can prevent other teeth from shifting in the mouth and help maintain facial tissue. With empty spaces, teeth can change their position and become crooked, making it more difficult to clean them properly and putting you at greater risk for other dental problems in the future.

Partial Dentures
Partial dentures are generally constructed out of a metal and acrylic composition. The design process involved in creating a removable partial (denture) is specific to the patient’s needs. Metal partials are considered stronger, thinner and more hygienic than an acrylic partial. Acrylic partials are usually recommended as a transitional or temporary partial. Every effort is made to design a self-cleansing partial denture that preserves the remaining teeth and oral structures.
When a partial denture is designed, the denturist acknowledges that chewing places a strain on the remaining teeth during eating. Partial dentures are designed so that the chewing forces can be distributed evenly over the entire remaining teeth and soft tissues. A properly designed partial denture will assist in support of your existing teeth and in some cases design modifications to your remaining teeth may be required to help equalize these forces.
Standard Dentures
Standard dentures are removable appliances to replace missing teeth and are constructed with basic tooth shades and shapes. There are two types of standard dentures: complete or partial. Complete dentures are for loss of all teeth in an arch. While partial dentures are used to fill the spaces created by missing teeth. Some reasons you may need complete or partial dentures are:
– Your current dentures need to be replaced
– You require some or all remaining teeth extracted
– Enhance your smile and facial tissues
– Restoring a full complement of teeth to improve chewing, speech, digestion and/or to prevent natural teeth from shifting.
Implant Overdentures
What to Expect After Extractions:
Your gums, tissues and mouth have gone through a drastic change. Your denture will need adjustments over the course of your gums healing to ensure proper fit. If at any time you need to see the Denturist, please do not suffer with sore spots. Call and book an adjustment appointment.
First 24 Hours:
Keep your denture in your mouth! It is important to remember that your denture is acting as a compress to help swelling and bleeding of the extraction sites. The Denturist will be the one to take your dentures out for the first time at your 24-hour check-up appointment. Any adjustments needed will be done at this time. To aid in the healing your gums, your Denturist recommends the use of Oxyfresh Super Relief Gel.
First Week:
Wear your dentures overnight for the first week. Take your dentures out after meals to rinse and brush under warm water. When soaking your dentures in Renew cleaner, do so for only 20-30 minutes once every two days. In the first week if you leave your dentures out any longer than this, it could cause your gum tissues to swell and will make it difficult to reinsert your dentures.
8 weeks – 6 months:
Your dentures will likely be loose. As your gums are healing, resorption of the bone (shrinkage) occurs and it creates space between the dentures and your gums. It is common currently to have a tissue conditioner (temporary reline). This will allow your dentures to fit snugly. Remember, your gums are still healing from extractions and swelling. You may need to have more than one tissue conditioner depending on how many extractions you’ve had. This is normal.
6 – 12 months
Depending on your rate of healing, somewhere between 6 and 12 months you will need a permanent reline. It is important to remain diligent with your follow up appointments, so your Denturist can recommend exactly when a reline is needed. Relines adapt the tissue-fitting surface of the denture to your gums resulting in a more correct fit. You should never wear loose or ill-fitting dentures. It can cause a tremendous amount of damage to your mouth often with little or no pain. Relines are a separate procedure and fee and is not included in the price of your dentures.

Complete Dentures
Complete standard dentures will fit comfortably and function satisfactory. However, they are constructed using physiological averages and do not take into consideration the anatomical differences between individuals. What this means for you is possibly more adjustments and a denture that will wear faster.

Precision Denture

Everyone has a unique bite, jaw and facial structure like that of a fingerprint. A precision denture is constructed by recording additional measurements of your jaw movements and face structure to create a personalized denture ensuring an enhanced fit.
These vital measurements are recorded with the use of the ARCUSdigma. The ARCUSdigma is a device/computer system which determines with high precision the trajectory of the mandibular joint during opening and closing of the mouth.
The temporomandibular joint is the most complicated joint in the human body due to its three-dimensional spatial movements of rotation and translation.
This technology also helps in determining the exact height of the bite which has significance in the cases of large-span prostheses, dentures, and prostheses produced for implants.
We choose to use the VitaPan Plus denture teeth in our precision dentures. These high-quality teeth provide the highest percentage of wear resistance, like natural teeth and enamel for a life-like appearance. Increased contact points are achieved on all biting surfaces of superior anatomical prosthetic teeth, allowing us to use a harder, longer lasting tooth in constructing a denture which does not require milling (wearing in) of the tooth surfaces.
The procedures used in fabricating a precision denture allow the denturist to provide you with the best fitting and best functioning denture possible. Standard dentures do not allow us to build the same type of dentures and so your expectations should be adjusted to the type of denture you ultimately choose.
The measurements our Denturists record using the ARCUSdigma system are used to ensure a precision fit and efficient production of your denture, limiting and even eliminating the expenditure of time and travel correcting malocclusions and tissue pressure from denture instability.
Mouth Guards & Night Guards
Every year, there are several thousand sport-related accidents that cause mouth or teeth injuries. People who are involved in sports with a high risk of injury (martial arts, hockey, football, etc…) should always wear a mouthguard.
A mouthguard reduces the risk and seriousness of injuries to the teeth and tissues in and around the mouth (lips, tongue, cheeks). A mouthguard is also effective in preventing concussion and jaw fractures. A custom fitted mouthguard is recommended because it is made to fit from an impression of your teeth to ensure they are protected.
Night guards are designed for a high percentage of individuals that suffer from numerous ailments that can destroy teeth, instigate headaches, result in chronic jaw pain, and cause several other symptoms that can interfere with one’s overall quality of life. Denture Relines & Repairs
Reline is a simple procedure where we re-fit the inside surfaces of your dentures to ensure they are fitting properly. This procedure usually takes two days.
Everyone should have their dentures relined every 2-3 years to ensure that they are fitting properly. You should never wear a loose, ill-fitting denture for extended periods of time; it can cause a tremendous amount of damage to your mouth, often with little or no pain involved. Everyone should have their dentures checked at least once every two years to ensure good oral health.
The purpose of a reline is to improve the fit of your denture. A reline is ideal when a denture becomes loose or when it is irritating your gums. Thus, reline helps to a make a denture more comfortable to wear. Relines are often needed as a result of your jaw tissues changing, such as becoming smaller. This process is known as “resorption” and can happen over a period of months to years.
Resorption can happen for several reasons including:
* Weight loss
* Tooth loss
* Bone loss
* Aging
* Disease
* Illness
Repair is also a frequent option. Your denturist will be able to restore your damaged dentures to its original state. A denture may need to be repaired due to breakage, chipping, wear and tear, or when additional teeth need to be added.
Some repairs need an impression in conjunction with repair. Never try to fix the denture yourself or use glue. Most repairs can be completed within a day. If your denture needs a repair, it may indicate other underlying problems, such as old age, worn teeth or a poor fit. Your denturist can help you keep your denture in good shape
